Our Mission Continued...

We wanted to dive deeper and learn more about Belltown. More specifically we wanted to research how Belltown was becoming more accessible to everyone.
Homelessness
We dived into more of the history of homelessness and how it's a situation that's not only in the 1980s, but right now it’s a problem that we need to focus on. In 1988 we found that in Belltown, they had created the “soup kitchen,” which was a homeless shelter for those who needed a temporary home. They hoped to bring awareness to those who could make an impact in the future. If we skip to the present, we can see that the homelessness crisis has increased, especially after the pandemic we have been experiencing for the past few years. So many small business owners became homeless because they had to close up shop and couldn't support themselves or their families anymore. As young college students, we can make a difference for others struggling financially. We learned a lot about the community of Belltown and thought it was a great community to help those who may need it. We as a group saw about 5 homeless tents, and that may not sound like a lot, but it is. There have been many shelters for homelessness set up all around the country. Why can't there be more in Belltown? This is when we can come in and use our young minds to think of solutions to make the five tents turn into zero tents and support those who need help. For example, in Germany, they made pod-like shelters for a single person that has beds, heat, and electricity. It's simple solutions like this that can make a difference. We have to understand not every homeless person wants to be in a shelter and we also have to consider that.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

We didn't want to just focus on homelessness but on those who have disabilities. It was interesting to learn about how Bell Street had designed areas for those who have autism. This shows that they want to accommodate and include everyone to have a good living situation. Those diagnosed with ASD are increasing fast throughout the United States. It’s essential to keep in mind that not everyone may live in the same conditions as others. Bell town has been following ASD guidelines to their residential area by making living areas more accessible. Their mission is “creating a framework for making public spaces more comfortable for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder” (Saitelbach. 2016). He used previous studies and learned that the best outcomes were integrating a Therapeutic Garden design. This is designed to include those on the autism spectrum. The plan was introduced within Belltown. Which is a neighborhood that has a lot of walking paths, tourist attractions, the water, and much more, which we had explained throughout this website that you can check back on by clicking the arrow button, which will bring you back to the “homepage.” To conclude everything, this project includes essential points for those with disabilities to apply to neighborhoods in the cities but to all settings, which can have such a positive outcome because it will show that we want to encompass everyone.

Concluding...

This is just the start of creating neighborhoods that can be more accessible to others who may face more challenges than others. It is essential to consider that so that we accommodate those who may need help. Helping out creates a community of respect and acceptance for those who may face challenges to feel more comfortable in their community and their home
