Environment

We saw a lot of interesting stuff like this sculpture park and this garden park with nice art pieces. We saw the pier and walked along the boardwalk and saw the ferry terminal. There were a lot of trees which was surprising because we are in the city and you’d expect to see only buildings but it was good to see some nature in the city. A lot of bikers and walkers. Seems like a community where it was relatively safe with accessible walking paths for everyone though there were a lot of hills. There are also train tracks and a train that goes through the sculpture park. It really did seem like a residential area with smaller businesses.
Our Experience
It matched up with our research. I heard that it’s a really residential area. I did see quite a lot of small businesses as well. Like they were corporate buildings and it was a bit hard to identify which buildings were for residents to live in. But it seemed like they had a lot of dining options and Belltown was right next to the water which was nice. So you can take the ferry as a choice of transportation if you want. Some businesses were closed and I don’t know if that is because of covid.
What We Heard...
Community
What we found similar was that from reading some information about Belltown that it was a really residential area with good walking paths close to tourist attractions like the pier, sculpture park, and the space needle. But they also had a community garden that I didn’t know about but it made it more inviting I thought and was a great place to build a community with all the residents living there. I found another thing that was similar, that Seattle's homeless situation has increased due to the pandemic and a lot of citizens losing their jobs, but in Belltown, we noticed that there were five tents. From this article I was reading “the Belltown Cafe & Shelter '' their mission was to eliminate homelessness but provide them with a safe shelter. This also brings awareness for those in the future who want to make a difference. One thing different was that there was some construction going on.
Asset Or Barrier?
The environment is an asset because this is important because this topic represents how alive the community is and what is in the neighborhood like a lot of greenery or what kind of walking paths there are for accessibility. This also shows how close the community is, for example how like if the neighborhood has a community garden, parks, or restaurants where everyone can meet up. During covid, it seemed like places closed down or the hours might have changed when the guidelines have changed. We did check out this flower place that Julia knew and she was surprised that it was closed. That could've been due to covid and the store having to close down. But overall the lifestyle seemed alive and getting back on its feet from the pandemic. It's important for the environment to welcome everyone and accept everyone. This is the space where residents are making a life for themselves. They should feel comfortable in the environment they are living in.
